Leader Training

All cub scouts deserve a dedicated team of trained leaders. Training provides important information about safety and liability, as well as helpful hints and useful information for doing the best job you can for our boys - without re-inventing the wheel! It doesn't take long and can make a huge difference in the quality of our programs.

The following is a summary of the training courses available for cub scout leaders. Scheduled Cub Scout Leader training for Occoneechee Council is included on the pack calendar. For more information and to find any additional classes, please visit the council training calendar and the council's cub scout leader training page.

Cub Scout Leader Records

All cub scout leaders must be registered with the pack. The pack also keeps a training record for each leader. Contact the pack trainer as you take classes to make sure your training records are up-to-date.

Cub Scout Leader Training Progression

A flow chart of training for each cub scout leader position can be found on the council web site. To be considered "trained" for your position, you must complete the Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, New Leader Essentials, and the Leader Specific Training for your position.

Online Training
The Fast Start Training and Youth Protection Training are available online. Supplemental courses, such as Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, and Weather Hazards, can also be taken online.

The BSA has launched a new web site for online learning.

If you have never had a BSA online training account (either MyScouting or E-Learning), go to the link above and select the link on the right to create a new account. Please enter your BSA ID number (from your membership card) to ensure that you get credit for online courses taken.

If you have previously used the old online training site, you will need to link your E-Learning account to the new site to create a new MyScouting account. Go to the link above for the new web site, select the link to the right to create a new account, and choose "Yes" on the next page (enter your E-Learning account info on this page and your email address on the next page).

When you get logged in, select E-Learning from the links at the left to access all the available online training.

Fast Start Training (FST)

New leaders should visit the online training site for the Fast Start Training for their leadership positions. These courses take about 20-30 minutes to complete and provide an overview of the structure and guidelines of the Cub Scout program, as well as an introduction to the specific leadership role.

Youth Protection Training (YPT)

This course is required for all leaders who work with scouts in any way. If you have extensive experience working with children's programs or have previously taken the trainer-taught course, the online version of this course may be sufficient for you. Otherwise, go ahead and take the online version, but sign up for the trainer-taught version as soon as possible. This is very important for the safety of the scouts and to reduce your liability by preventing questionable situations.

New Leader Essentials (NLE)

The next course for all new leaders is New Leader Essentials. This course is not available online, but is offered at least once a month (except July) within the Occoneechee Council. All leaders take the same course, regardless of volunteer position.

Leader Specific Training (LST)

The final course for all new leaders to be considered "trained" is Leader Specific Training. This course is not available online, and is not offered as often as NLE, so try to take it as soon as a course is available that fits into your schedule. It is often offered as part of a training academy, which allows new leaders to take both NLE and LST on the same day. There are several versions of LST for different types of leaders. Make sure you take the one(s) required for your position(s).

Outdoor Leader Training (BALOO, OLSW)

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) and Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos (OLSW) are optional for most leaders, but are required for certain outdoor cub scout activities. If you are leading an outdoor pack activity or an outdoor non-Webelos den activity, check the BALOO requirements for the activity. If you are leading an outdoor Webelos den activity, check the OLSW requirements for the activity.

University of Scouting (UoS)

The University of Scouting is a full day of supplemental and advanced training for adult leaders.

Additional Training

There are many other training courses available to scout leaders, including Wood Badge, Safe Swim Defense (available online), Safety Afloat (available online), and Weather Hazards (available online). Other training that is not cub scout specific, such as CPR or boy scout leader training may also be useful.

Trainer Development Conference (TDC)

The Trainer Development Conference is for anyone interested in helping to train other scouters.

If you have any questions or are interested in becoming an instructor, contact the pack trainer (please specify "training" in the subject).
